In Doom 2016 you get plenty of ammo and you can basically use your favorite weapon all the time. Health and ammo do not regenerate and the only way to get them (apart from picking them up in the level) is by attacking the demons and either glory killing them or sawing them in half with a chainsaw. The biggest difference between the two games (apart from a few minor changes like the awesome "meat hook") is the the enemy variety (Doom Eternal introduces a few new ones) and the scarcity of ammo. You have to fight a large number of different demons with a large variety of different weapons including two different shotguns, a rocket launcher, a plasma rifle and a railgun (called gauss canon). And honestly it's really good in both 2016 and Eternal. Gameplay:The thing that everyone is really here for. (You could pull a lever and somewhere in the level a door to a level from the original Doom game would open). The one thing I missed were the hidden "retro levels" from Doom 2016. Additionally there are also soundtrack vinyls and cheat codes (the best addition to the collectibles in my opinion) that can modify the game in various ways. Instead of 26 little doom Slayers there are figurines of all the Demons in the game. Doom Eternals collectibles are generally more rewarding (with one important exception). This can lead to frustration since you are basically just roaming through the level hoping somewhere behind the next corner is the final doom slayer-figurine.Doom Eternal has a different approach, by showing you the collectibles pretty open in the level (they are even marked on the map if you have a certain upgrade) and leaving it to you to figure out a way to get to them.
Doom 2016 generally just hides them somewhere without many indications to where they are. The cosmetic collectibles have some differences. (Although they are more often hidden in 2016 while Eternal sometimes just puts them in your path.
The practical upgrades are pretty similar in both games, allowing you to upgrade your suit, your weapons and your stats. Both games have a number of collectibles per level both cosmetic and practical (various different upgrades). They range from Earth over an asteroid belt and an ancient, empty city to, again, hell.Ĭollectibles:This a small aspect of the two games but I still want to say a few things about it. While Doom 2016 only has two locations: Mars and hell, Doom Eternal has a new location for (almost) every level. A few new mechanics are introduced like punchable switches or. They also introduce a more fleshed out parcouring system that offers a nice downtime from the intense fighting. Not only are the levels more varied (and colorfull) they also leave less room for hiding, forcing you to engage the demons. Both have fairly linear levels where you have to push buttons (or rather skulls) to open up paths (and fight off demons). Levels:Levels are an area where Doom Eternal is in my opinion better than 2016.
Some other ancient civilaziation matters too but I won't go into depth here. It revolves around trying to stop the Earth being invaded by demons from hell by killing multiple demon "priests" and finally killing a giant monster. The story in Doom Eternal is more complex and requires you to actually pay attention to comprehend why you're doing what you're doing. It isn't particularly deep but it doesn't need to be since it isn't much more than a vague motivation. While Portal 2 had more locations and more varied gameplay, the general narrative, pacing and atmosphere of the first game are superior. The story in Doom 2016 revolves around trying to close a portal to hell and is pretty straight forward. The difference reminds me of Portal and Portal 2. There are a more cutscenes which are often in the third person perspective. It on the other hand has a variety of different locations which are isolated from one another since you teleport yourself to the starting point from your ship, the fortress of doom.
This continuity is one of the biggest strenghts of Doom 2016 and an area where it is superior to Doom Eternal. It mainly switches between a research base on Mars and hell.
The story is mainly told through "audio calls" you get from different characters and a few first person cutscene. Story, Progression:Doom 2016 is overall more focused and shorter than Eternal, with a back to back progression of increasingly hard levels. This post will contain some spoilers for both games. Having played both games now I can see where this opinion comes from though I still disagree with it. I hadn't heared that much about these games before apart from the fact that they had amazing gameplay and that a lot of people preferred Doom 2016 to its sequel. I recently beat both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.
